Press Release: US Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke on the Senate floor today about how the President’s deferred action for childhood arrivals has led to skyrocketing numbers of unaccompanied minors illegally entering the United States.

Excerpts of his remarks are below.

In recent weeks it’s become impossible to deny the fact that we have a full-blown humanitarian crisis along the U.S.-Mexican border. Sadly, this crisis is directly the result of President Obama’s own policies and it involves tens of thousands of young children… risking their lives.

Tomorrow before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Secretary Jeh Johnson of the Department of Homeland Security will be testifying and I hope he can provide us some answers.

Can anyone at the White House or in the Administration say with certainty that the children being released from US custody are leaving with an actual family member? …For that matter, can the Administration say with certainty that none of these children have been handed over to an adult with a criminal record?

The crisis we’re facing now represents a tragic and painful example of the law of unintended consequences. Two years ago when the President stood in the Rose Garden and announced a unilateral administrative change in U.S. immigration policy, he probably thought he was doing a good thing. But between that policy change and his broader failure to uphold our immigration laws, indeed, his statement that he essentially will not enforce broad swaths of those laws, the President has created an extremely dangerous incentive for children and their parents to cross into the United States, under these sorts of treacherous and horrific circumstances.

These children are being preyed on by drug cartels and human traffickers, and they’re at high risk of being kidnapped, raped, or even killed while traveling in this long dangerous journey to the United States. But sadly, when they arrive here, we still have no way of guaranteeing their safety because of lack of an adequate plan to deal with this humanitarian crisis. Mr. President, President Obama effectively created this problem and now he has an opportunity to work with us to fix it.

Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance and Judiciary Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.

  1. This crisis is the responsibility of the whole federal government, not just the executive. Congress has allowed the lawlessness of this administration and previous administrations regarding lax immigration enforcement. DHS secretary Jeh Johnson should be impeached for refusing to enforce the laws with which he is entrusted. The full blown crisis regarding the rule-of-law is not new, and Cornyn is (and has been) in a position to make much more of an issue of it than he has. Congress must re-establish the separation of powers and hold the administration accountable. Blaming the administration for actions that congress has the power to stop is hypocritical.

  2. This was NOT a “poorly thought out policy”. It is a deliberate attempt to flood the United States with Invading Foreign Nationals who, if allowed to stay, will eventually ‘fundamentally’ change the very nature and fabric of our nation.

Cornyn is a moron for believing anything else.
