Petition Drive to Save Monument Draws Crowd

Texarkana, TX: Despite some threats of potential violence against the petition drive to save the Confederate Mothers Monument, the day has been peaceful at the site for the signing drive. The drive started at 10 a.m. this morning and will continue until 6 p.m. this afternoon. The signing tables have set up in front of the church and across the street from the monument.

According to the “The ‘Whose Who’ of Our Miller County,” at any given time there have been at least up to two hundred people on-site. The “Whose Who of Miller County” is currently streaming the drive on Facebook.

Social media had been alive with rumors that someone was going to take down the monument by force Friday night. The “Whose Who of Miller County” and other people were present and recording; however, the rumors turned out to be false and there were no noted problems.

Those wishing to sign petitions to keep the monument have until 6 p.m. today to go downtown and sign. According to coordinators of the drive, they plan to turn in the petitions to the city council Monday. There is a counter-petition online to take down the monument and have it moved to a different location; however, we have not received any notices of a planned date for additional events at this time.
