Bullet Injuries University Athlete at George Dobson Field
TEXARKANA, TEXAS— On Saturday, April 29, 2023, around 5:30 p.m. a stray bullet from a disturbance on Lynda Avenue struck a Texarkana A&M University-Texarkana student-athlete during a baseball game taking place more than 400 yards away at George Dobson Field.
All parties involved are now in custody. The Texarkana Texas Police Department arrested two suspects believed to be the shooters in the incident: Kamauri Butler (17) for Aggravated Assault and Demarco Banks (20) for Deadly Conduct. Three more arrests were also made in the case: Yankeengea Smith (49) for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Nathan Moore (19) for Tampering with Evidence and Possession of Marijuana, Marcell Beaver (19) for Possession of Marijuana.
“After further investigation, and a review of the circumstances of this event, it is truly unbelievable that the bullet traveled at such a trajectory at over 400 yards, through trees, and across a street to strike the student,” Texarkana Texas Police Chief Kevin Schutte said.
The student is in stable condition and continues to recover at a local hospital.
“While this weekend was difficult for our community, it highlighted the strength of our first responders and everyone involved,” said Texarkana, Texas City Manager David Orr. “Our commitment to a safe atmosphere for residents and visitors remains a top priority.”
